Care and Cultivation
Devil's Claw or Grapple Plant is so named due to its fearsomely barbed seed pod.
This herb has a long history of use in South
Africa, where natural remedies are part of everyday life and the number
of healers outweighs the number of doctors and nurses.
It is not the pretty flower of the Devil's Claw plant or the seed that is used
medicinally but the water storage tubers that grows deep into the
desert to sustain the plant through dry seasons.

So popular has the plant become for its anti-inflammatory and pain
relieving effects that it is in danger of being over-harvested.
The graph shows larger and larger amounts are being exported, seriously impacting on wild stocks.
An additional threat comes as indigenous tribes are thrown off their
land to make way for diamond mines. Not only will the Devil's
Claw be destroyed, but the tribespeople will be forced to harvest
what’s left to make a living.
In the face of these threats, Bioforce began working with a team of scientists from the University of Münster,
Germany. Years of hard work resulted in a comprehensive understanding
of
how best to cultivate Devil's Claw using an organic protocol. This
enabled us to grow our own Devil's Claw on a farm on the South
African/Namibian
border.
