Changing periods are often one of the first signs that you are approaching the menopause and you are in the average age range, 45-55, so it is possible.
Periods at this point tend to be irregular, varying between heavy and light, on time, late, early, getting closer together or further apart, missing, long or short in any combination!
However, this scenario can go on for several years before your periods stop for good.
Your doctor may be able to test your hormone levels and that will give you a better idea of what is happening.
