What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most accurate ways to determine when extra pounds are becoming a danger to your health. Your weight and height are compared in order to gauge total body fat. Someone with a BMI of 25 to 30 is about 20 percent overweight, which is generally believed to carry moderate health risks. A BMI of 30 and higher means that you are obese. The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing additional health problems. Body Mass Index Calculator
BMI Status Below 18.5 - Underweight 18.5 - 24.9 - Normal 25.0 - 29.9 - Overweight 30.0 and above - Obese You could be more susceptible to health problems if you are overweight, so it makes sense to do what you can to minimise excess weight. Even a small weight loss (just 10 percent of your current weight) could help to lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity. But remember that two people can have the same BMI but a different percentage of body fat. However a high BMI may prompt you to talk to your doctor about other factors, e.g. smoking, waist circumference, physical activity and diet. |
