Linseeds

Linseed, otherwise known as flaxseed, is one of mankind’s oldest traditional constipation remedies.

It has many uses having been grown for its seeds as well as plant fibres. Linseed originated from geographical areas between the Eastern Mediterranean and India, and was also extensively cultivated by ancient cultures such as the Egyptians and Ethiopians.

Linseed’s versatility has seen other uses aside from constipation, including paper and fabric manufacture, dyes, soaps and hair gels. The oil is to be found in many wood finishing products as well as being a useful nutritional supplement.

The reason that these little linseeds are so useful for relieving constipation in a product like Linoforce is that it is rich in fibre. Furthermore the outside of the seed is coated with a natural film that absorbs moisture, creating a kind of ‘jelly’ making the coating of the linseeds slippery.

Senna leaves

Senna leaves are another ingredient in Linoforce traditionally used for relieving constipation. The plant can be found throughout the tropics. The leaves, the part of plant used in Linoforce, have played a major role in traditional healthcare and were often prepared as infusions for a number of conditions. Nowadays senna leaves can also be found in herbal teas – used particularly by those trying to lose weight.

Frangula bark

Frangula, or alder buckthorn, grows in wet soil in open woods and hedgerows. Although having a number of traditional medicinal uses, today, it is best known as a natural herbal remedy for constipation.

In the more distant past, it has played an important role in Greek Medicine. Galen, a Greek Physician in 2 AD, credited Frangula and its close botanical relatives with an ability to protect one from witches, demons, poisons and headaches! Many years later, Frangula was found to be very useful in the manufacture of gunpowder (no pun intended!).
