The Fresh Sage Herb Story
Menoforce is unique as we use freshly harvested sage plants in our manufacturing process.
In the 1950s, our founder, Alfred Vogel insisted that only the freshest of plants were used to craft the remedies for his patients at his naturopathic clinic in Teufen, Switzerland. This lead him to pioneer the concept of fresh herb extraction – a technique we still use today for our herbal remedies.
Research confirms that fresh herb extracts often make better remedies. For instance, the fresh Echinacea extract used in Echinaforce contains almost 3 times more active substances than can be obtained from the same amount of dried herbs1.

At A.Vogel, we insist on using the extract of organically cultivated fresh Sage leaf in the production of Menoforce Sage tablets. Harvesting is carried out between 12pm and 4pm when the amount of volatile oil present is at its highest.
Sage herb
The herb sage is often used in cooking to enhance the taste of food. The plant is native to the Mediterranean, although it also does grow well in temperature climes.
A number of varieties (or cultivars) of sage may be found. Many of these are grown for their ornamental value and it is the cultivar Salvia officinalis which is most commonly used in herbal remedies. The oil found in Sage leaves can be extracted to give us Sage essential oil, used externally in aromatherapy.
Sage leaves have a long history of use as a herbal remedy. The Latin root of its botanical name, Salvia, means ‘good health’ and its medicinal use goes back aeons. The Romans considered it a sacred herb and the Chinese traded tea in order to get supplies of Sage to use medicinally.
In folklore, Sage symbolised domestic virtue, and was said to only grow properly in gardens where women ruled the household!
