Why is the health of our gut relevant?
Up to 80% of your immune system exists in the gut, this means if you’re gut bacteria balance is off then it can have an influence on how allergies present.
Our gut bacteria balance is created as early as in the womb, but from this point on, all throughout our lives, everything we do in terms of diet and lifestyle can manipulate this balance.
Research suggests alterations in the gut microbiome may contribute to the development and severity of allergies, including hayfever. Specifically, changes in the composition and diversity of gut bacteria may influence the immune system and potentially impact the nasal environment.
What are the mechanisms behind the gut having such a big influence?
- Immune Modulation: The gut microbiota produces metabolites that can influence immune responses throughout the body, including the nasal cavity.
- Gut-Nose Axis: The gut and nose are connected via nerves & blood allowing for effective communictation. There is also a nasal microbiome! The gut microbiome can impact the nasal microbiome, potentially influencing the development and severity of allergic rhinitis.
What are the research findings when it comes to hayfever and the gut?
- Reduced Diversity: Studies have shown that individuals with allergic rhinitis tend to have a less diverse gut microbiome compared to healthy individuals. Plus, different balances of specific types of bacteria. (1)
- Genetic Associations: Allergic rhinitis has some risk of genetic predispoition as highlighted in some research including twin studies. HOWEVER, we can switch genes on and off via our environment, so this can be overcome in some cases.
How can we work on improving our gut health?
- Pre & probiotics: Studies have explored the potential of pre & probiotics to improve gut health and have immune results. (3)
- Dietary Interventions: Diet diversity - eating a varied and plant heavy diet directly influences gut bacteria diversity. Anti-histamine dietary protocol may also be helpful to some degree, but may not be a preferable long-term tactic as we really want to address the root of the problem.
