Flu symptoms

What are the symptoms of flu, how long do they last and when should I see a doctor?

Echinacea is a traditional herb known to aid the body in its fight against colds and flu by supporting the immune system – but not all Echinacea is the same! Research shows that the fresher the herb, the more effective the remedy will be, which is why our Echinaforce cold and flu remedies are made using freshly harvested Echinacea.

I recently was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 70. For the past two nights I have had a horrible headache right above my eyes and along my forehead. I have become dizzy and confused but I have not had seizures. I feel that after reading the flu symptoms I may be developing the flu. Is this a possibility or is it more signs of epilepsy? Presently, I am taking lamotrigine. In the past 6 months I have had two seizures; the last one was the result of immense stress, poor eating, and poor sleep. The first one was the result of nose surgery. Both “seizures” lasted less then 2 minutes

Hello Mike. Yes, a viral infection affecting your sinuses could be the cause, but this will not be the first thought on my mind taking into account your medical history. I wonder if you might have a migraine - this condition can be associated with epilepsy. In any case, your symptoms are not typical and I would suggest that you make an appointment to see your doctor in order to get to the bottom of your headache.

I started having extreme full body pain for about 4 days before my scratchy throat started and the next morning I woke with sore throat and fever chills which lasted all of yesterday and found myself in a puddle of sweat this morning. Also the only congestion I have is when I spit. I keep finding streaks of blood in it. Can you help me understand why and how much longer this should last? No fever this morning

Hello Anjelica. Viral infections such as the cold or flu will trigger an immune response in your body which produces a large number of chemicals in order to fight the infection. These lead to the symptoms typical of these infections. Fever is a common response to infection and sweating is your body's normal response to raised body temperature. The acute stages of flu should resolve within 3 to 5 days but if they persist, you should seek further help from your doctor.

Hello Robin, A fever is part of the immune system’s natural defence against viral infections, rest as much as possible, as this will encourage your temperature to regulate. Also ensure that you are not becoming dehydrated, as you will lose a lot of water through sweating with a fever. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is a good idea to let the doctor know. Best wishes.
