Yes, it is common to experience a reduced sense of smell due to congestion. Basically, smells such as a strong flower stimulate nerve cells high up in the nose. These cells send messages to the brain which determines what exactly the smell is – a rose, for example. If your nose is all bunged up, this process can't happen and smell can be affected.
