Mucus is produced naturally by the body and has the function of keeping the delicate membranes in our head and nasal passages moist and protected.
However, when these tissues become inflamed such as with a head cold, the body responds to the infection by producing larger amounts of mucus – this is described as phlegm.
The purpose of this extra mucus is to wash the irritation out of the body – which could be pollen in the case of hayfever, or viruses when you have a head cold.
