Changing periods are often one of the first signs that you are approaching the menopause.
Periods at this point can vary between heavy and light, on time, late, early, missing, long or short, or in any combination! For some women this scenario can go on for some time before their periods stop for good.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to tell exactly how long that this phase will last.
However, as you say that your periods continue to become heavy or prolonged, it is important to check with your doctor.
Prolonged or heavy periods can cause anaemia, which in turn can cause fatigue, low mood, poor sleep etc. It may need some kind of intervention.
