Stress can have a big effect on the hormones and can stop periods for a while, however, you are in the average age range, 45-55, for starting the menopause so it could really be either.
Your doctor may be able to test your hormone levels and that might give you a better idea of what is happening.
In the meantime, it is important to support the body during times of stress so I would suggest a good female multi-vitamin, your local healthshop should be able to recommend an appropriate one.
