background

I am 52 years old and I had my womb removed when I was 31. A year ago I had one ovary removed, and I am now getting morbid thoughts which I find very distressing. I am crying all of the time and I feel panicky. I have a solo oestrogen patch, but it is a very low dose. It has only helped with the hot flushes, not with any other symptoms. I started getting hot flushes a few years ago. I can cope with them, but not the morbid thoughts and general anxiety. I started a low dose of antidepressants about six weeks ago which has not helped. Can you tell me how long these horrid symptoms last? I know hot flushes can go on for years, but will the anxiety last as long? I can't cope anymore.

You won’t get the menopause the minute you turn 50! The average starting age is actually between 45 and 55 and it can often depend on a number of factors including hereditary, weight and health, however every single woman will have an individual menopause.
