Waking up during the night in perimenopause
Is anyone else finding that they have no trouble falling asleep in the evening, but then suddenly wake up, bing, in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep? It seems to be such a common issue. Every time I bring it up while travelling around the country delivering training sessions, so many midlife women tell me they can relate.
Falling asleep isn’t the problem—we’re absolutely shattered by the end of the day. It’s the waking up in the small hours that’s the real struggle. Personally, I’ve been trying to figure out what might be causing it. Is it the coffee I had earlier? The glass of wine with dinner?
I’ve also been wondering whether my sleep is better when I fit in a bit of exercise in the evening—or when I skip the sweeties after tea. That might actually be a thing. It really feels like a case of trial and error, finding what works best for you.
If this is happening regularly, you might be experiencing a cortisol spike in the middle of the night. In that case, I’d definitely suggest looking at your blood sugar levels. Try to keep your energy nice and stable throughout the day—this might go a long way in improving your sleep quality at night.
I’d love to hear if this is something you're dealing with too. What’s working for you? Whether it’s a particular herb, meditation, a specific exercise routine—let me know what you’re trying and how you’re getting on with it.
