It may be that you've pulled a tendon connecting the muscles of the calf to the foot when you strained your calf.
Tendons connect muscle to bone and so there's every reason to suspect you might have hurt both.

Rest, raise and apply Atrogel® 2-4 times a day and you should be fine in a week.
