Can perimenopause increase relationship frustration?

Perimenopausal women are tired. They don't get enough sleep. They have aches and pains, brain fog, anxiety, and hot flushes. Of course, this can make any person more irritable and more frustrated in their dealings with others.

Plus, perimenopause is a transition or a change that's happening within us. It's not going to be obvious to those around us. Family members, partners, or work colleagues can be completely unaware that behind the scenes we are changing our operating system and undergoing a major hormonal shift to lower levels.

And it's not just oestrogen. Oxytocin is our love hormone. It hits the roof when we fall in love or have a new baby. But it can drop significantly when we hit our perimenopause years. It's the rosy glow of adoration, and it can be whipped away and it can leave you wondering how you ever fancied your partner or tolerated your teenager's strops.

It’s temporary and normal. It's an emotional disconnect. Consider it natures way of telling you to save some of those resources for yourself. It's an opportunity to re-evaluate the demands that are being made of you – what's working? Maybe it's time for the kids to start picking up and washing their own socks.

There can be all sorts of circumstances at home or at work that you’d like changed. Communicating these needs and what's going on with you is important. It's going to help make relationships a little less frustrating.

What else can help?
