Are spices a hindrance or a help?

When it comes to spices, opinions tend to be split fairly evenly down the middle in terms of how and if they might help. On one side, you have those that actively enjoy incorporating them into meals and take advantage of their numerous health benefits but, equally, there are those that see spices as a gateway to digestive upsets such as bloating, reflux, heartburn, cramping and even diarrhoea.
