There are a number of simple things that can be done to tackle belly fat. First of all, exercise is very important. If you are able, try something like swimming which will give the whole body a workout. Alongside this, gym work or an exercise class like Pilates or 'legs, bums and tums' could help tackle belly fat. You could speak to someone in your local gym to find out what's available.
Other than that, it may help to reduce your sugar intake as research shows this can slow down metabolism - the rate at which we burn energy – and may directly contribute to the build-up of belly fat. Sugary drinks, sweet teas and coffee, and snacks like biscuits, can all add up to a high daily sugar intake. Instead try to drink lots of plain still water (we need 1.5-2 litres a day) and, if you can, snack on fruits, nuts and seeds.
A diet high in protein has also been linked to a reduction in belly fat. Foods rich in protein include eggs, lean meat, poultry, fish, dairy and more. You could explore our recipe hub for some healthy meals high in protein and other nutrients.
