I am 54 years old. My periods had stopped for 11 months, and then I started bleeding again for 2 months. I have not had a period now for 5 months. I am suffering from bad night-sweats and weight gain, but I have been told by my GP that they could not offer me anything until I have been free from my periods for a year. Can you suggest anything to me?

You won’t get the menopause the minute you turn 50! The average starting age is actually between 45 and 55 and it can often depend on a number of factors including hereditary, weight and health, however every single woman will have an individual menopause.
