Most women will be through the menopause and safe from pregnancy by the time they are in their mid 50s, so if you still have an active sex life then you would still need some form of contraceptive.
Unfortunately, hormonal contraceptives can mask your own natural hormone levels which can make it difficult to tell exactly where you are through the menopause, so it is best to be safe.
However, it may be an idea to discuss this with your doctor the next time they see you as there may be other alternatives that would be better for you at this time
