Silicon is a naturally occurring mineral substance and although seemingly similar in name, should not be confused with silicone.
Silicon is denoted by the chemical symbol Si and has an atomic mass of 14. It has a great ability to bind to other substances – for instance, it is found combined with oxygen to form a substance known as silicic acid. This can be found in colloidal form, in Silicol® gel, which is a health supplement.
Silicone on the other hand, is a polymer with many industrial uses.
Many will be familiar with it sealing the edges of a bath or basin. It is also used as a lubricant, in your pots and pans, to seal parts of your car’s engine and of course, in breast implants.
