Symptoms of anxiety or panic are common during the menopause. These can crop up as a result of fluctuating hormones but can also be made worse by nutrient deficiencies or wobbly blood sugar levels.
Deep breathing can help calm anxiety attacks both during the day and at night. When you feel one coming on, remain calm by breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth; if you are breathing correctly, your abdomen (not just your chest) will be rising on an in breath and falling on an out breath. Repeat until you feel your anxiety easing and calm returning.
Calming herbs such as Valerian which can be found in our Dormeasan drops can also help ease sleep disturbances caused by the symptoms of mild anxiety. You can also use it during the day to help ease daytime anxiety.
To help tackle the emotional symptoms associated with anxiety or panic attacks, you could also try a Flower Essence. These are traditionally used to help reduce emotional issues/fears etc. We have one called Night Essence which can be used to help address sleep problems.
I would also suggest taking a magnesium supplement with your evening meal; magnesium is needed, especially during the menopause, for mood, relaxation and sleep and many of us risk becoming deficient during this time.
Also, aim to eat a well balanced meal containing sufficient calories, protein and healthy fats and have a light snack before bedtime if need be, to help support your blood sugar levels during the course of the night.
