Most women would be through, or nearly through, the menopause by 55 and usually this is when you could stop the HRT.
However, coming off HRT can have its own problems and can cause withdrawal symptoms similar to menopause ones (you are after all coming down from a high level of hormones, albeit artificially induced so it is a bit like a menopause!)
I would suggest that if you wish to stop the HRT to discuss it with your doctor and come off really, really slowly in order to allow your body to re-adjust to your own low levels.
