Lower oestrogen can have an effect on carbohydrate metabolism making it more difficult for the body to process them which then results in weight gain.
I would suggest cutting down your carb intake and increasing protein and vegetables, weight loss is often easier this way. If you just try to cut calories and exercise more the body goes into survival mode and slows your metabolism even further and you may have found that eating less makes you put on more weight. Have a read of the Low GL Diet or the Paleo Diet, these may help you.
However, if your weight gain has been quite high then it is best to double check with your doctor, low thyroid can often be a contributory factor and your doctor can test for this.
