Quick fire Q&A session – Nutritionist Tips To Tackle Bloating

@emmatalksnutrition

I never quite manage to make these as short and snappy as I’d like ? But anyway, my take homes for hitting bloating on the head are as follows: - Chew, chew, chew! 20 times every mouthful as it’s the first step of digestion and one you have control over, don’t waste it! - Intermittent fasting can be extreme, but the research doesn’t lie. My advice to reap the benefits but not have to go to extremes is to extend the overnight fast by 14 hours. Giving your gut time to rest and reset. - Get a good variety of plant fibre every week. - Using PPIs? Question why, especially if you’ve been on them long-term. - Artificial sweeteners and refined seed oils, avoid! These are some of the main ingredients of many processed foods which tells us all we need to know. - Stress switches off your digestion and can be the missing link to a happier gut, Aim to balance our days or evenings with some calm, plus, go to bed on time. - L+ lactic acid-rich Molkosan in some water, for daily, targeted gut support, yes please.

1. Easiest change you can make to support your digestion /bloating?

Focus on chewing. 20 times per mouthful. Digestion starts in the mouth so don’t skip it.

2. Another simple tip that anyone can try?

Fast for 14 hours daily. It sounds like a lot, but its not. Stop eating at 7pm, don’t have breakfast before 9am. Your gut needs to rest and recover too and it’s the conditions our gut was primed to work on. Grazing is not the one.

3. Best food for gut health?

Your gut loves wholefood, plant-based foods because they contain lovely soluble fibre. If plant-based foods bloat you at first, it means your gut bacteria balance isn’t optimal.

4. Worst daily habit for gut health?

I would say, PPI use, if you’re taking this medication long-term you need to have a rethink, always ask why. Stomach acid is key.

5. Worst food for gut health?

Going by the research, I have big concerns over artificial sweeteners and processed seed, vegetable oils. They are hidden everywhere too.

6. Biggest lifestyle challenge?

Stress. Stress = low stomach acid = impaired digestion / absorption = dysbiosis in the gut = bloating. More downtime, more movement, more sleep, more time in nature, have good people around you, all of which will help you to offset the burden of crazy lives.

7. Best supplement for bloating?

For bloating specifically, a source of postbiotics, such as Molkosan which is rich in L+ lactic acid. This way it helps to support your natural balance of bacteria rather than risking influencing the balance too harshly.
