Mouth symptoms during perimenopause

Okay, let's take a look at some of the weird things that can go on in the mouth during perimenopause.

Burning mouth is one of the weirdest mouth symptoms. And it's not just a dry mouth, which is very common. This is an intense feeling of burning in the mouth, especially the tongue, and it can make the tongue feel quite swollen.

Other weird symptoms include a metallic taste in your mouth, recurrent mouth ulcers, bleeding and receding gums, and toothache.

All of the mouth symptoms are associated with changing hormone levels that you experience in perimenopause, and their overall effect on your body.

Aristotle thought women had less teeth than men. Obviously, he was wrong. But maybe the ladies in his life were having a tough oral health time.

Simple tips to help keep your mouth happy and healthy

So, here's what you need to do. You need to practise good oral hygiene and flossing. But be aware that your mouth might be more sensitive to things like chemicals in regular toothpaste or mouthwash. You might need to switch to something gentle, organic, or natural.

If your gums are sensitive or receding, you might be better off with a softer brush or a better tooth brushing technique, just so it's gentle on the gums.

Hydration is really important. You want a moist, lubricated mouth.

And finally, you should get regular dental checkups and let the dentist know that you're in perimenopause.
